For years George Soros has faced criticism from opponents who accuse him of financing unrest inside the United States. His Open Society Foundations have been described as a major source of funding for groups that promote lenient crime policies and organize disruptive street protests.
This week the Department of Justice took a step closer to action. Senior officials confirmed that federal prosecutors are preparing possible RICO and wire-fraud cases against the foundation and its affiliates.
Former President Donald Trump has often called Soros a “bad actor” who funds “violent protests” and left-wing extremism. After the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Trump urged the DOJ to move forward.
On September 25 a memo from Aakash Singh, an aide to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, went out to U.S. attorneys in New York, Chicago, Washington, California and other major cities. It instructed them to draft strategies to investigate the Open Society Foundations for racketeering, arson and possible material support for terrorism.
Watchdog groups are backing the effort with research. The Capital Research Center reports that Soros has funneled more than $80 million to 54 organizations linked to crime, unrest and domestic extremism since 2016.
About $23 million allegedly went to seven groups that fit the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism, including property destruction and riots. Trump told Fox News: “This is more than protests. This is real agitation.” Antifa remains classified as a terror group under executive order.
Representatives of Soros reject the charges, calling them “politically motivated” and an attack on free speech. They argue the foundation’s grants are legal and peaceful.
Critics highlight transfers of funds to groups such as al-Haq, which Israel has flagged for links to violence, as proof the philanthropy has crossed into dangerous territory. A DOJ spokesperson said, “We prioritize public safety and investigate organizations that conspire to commit acts of violence.”
Social Media Reaction
The news has gained wide attention online. #SorosInvestigation trended with a sharp increase in “Soros RICO” mentions after September 20. Right-leaning accounts praised the probe, while critics denounced it as antisemitic. Key reactions include:
- Calls For A Shutdown: Nick Sortor wrote, “There must be accountability for this,” earning tens of thousands of likes and shares.
- Ban The Bucks: A Red Eagle Updates poll asked if Soros’s money should be banned from U.S. politics. Ninety-five percent of respondents agreed. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also criticized Soros.
- Global Meddling Exposed: Glenn Beck resurfaced a 2015 clip of Viktor Orbán warning about Soros’s migrant plan, linking it to U.S. border issues and BLM riots.
Scandals Around Soros Circle
Other controversies tied to Soros are also in the spotlight. Former Soros fund manager Howard Rubin was indicted on September 26 in New York for allegedly running a trafficking ring in a Manhattan penthouse. Reports describe soundproof rooms, electric shocks and NDAs for victims. In California Soros spent $10 million on redistricting campaigns, which critics like Steve Hilton call a “disgrace to America.” Elon Musk has warned of potential jail time for vandals allegedly linked to Soros-funded groups.
Scandal | Soros Link | Why It Matters |
---|---|---|
DOJ RICO Probe | $80M to 54 terror-linked groups | Could lead to asset seizures and halt funding for riots |
Sex Trafficking Bust | Ex-fund manager Howard Rubin | Exposes alleged elite misconduct tied to Soros’s circle |
Election Meddling | $10M for California redistricting | Seen as buying political influence and power |
Tesla Attacks | Alleged funding of vandals | Threatens U.S. innovation and supports anarchist acts |
Political Impact
Trump has named Soros and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman as “agitators” who help fuel left-wing extremism. “They’re going to have some problems,” he said at the White House. The DOJ is also reviewing USAID’s $260 million in Soros-linked grants, adding to internal disputes over past FBI leadership. Pressure on the department is rising.
Supporters of the probe view it as a chance to secure safer communities, protect elections and confront billionaires they believe operate without accountability. For them, this represents a key reason they backed Trump: to challenge powerful elites who influence politics behind the scenes.
